The Department of Agronomy and Soils is part of the College of Agriculture. Work in agronomy began at Auburn in the 1880s with the support of 3 of the early directors of the Agricultural Experiment Station, who were agronomists and also served concurrently as professors and administrators in Auburn's agricultural teaching division. In 1914 a Department of Crops and Soils was established and in 1930 the present name was adopted. The Department has operated the Soil Testing Laboratory since 1953.
