Bank of Maryland
Variant namesThe Bank of Maryland received a charter in 1790, and publicly traded its stock. In 1832, a coalition of several businessmen purchased enough shares to hold a majority stake in the bank, and successfully gained control over the institution. In 1833, a financial panic forced the bank to request assistance from the United States Treasury Department. Despite receiving $300,000, the bank failed in March 1834.
