Joseph Kilgore was born in Scotland in 1690, and immigrated to York, Me., in 1718. Two years later he purchased 20 acres and married Penelope Trueworthy, or Treworgy (1694-1764). They had three sons, Joseph Kilgore, Jr. (1730-1787), Benjamin Kilgore (1732-1808), and John Kilgore (1735-1818). They may also have had daughters, whose names and birth dates are not included in this collection. Joseph, Jr. and John fought in the Revolutionary War, and John served in the State Legislature from 1811-1812. Joseph Kilgore, Sr. died sometime after 1764.
