Women for Peace (Chicago, Ill.)
Women for Peace, the Chicago chapter of Women Strike for Peace, was founded in 1961. The original purpose of the group was to demand the banning of above-ground nuclear tests because of the danger of radioactive fallout. Their actions helped lead to the Partial Test Ban Treaty in 1963, which ended atmospheric nuclear tests. Women for Peace was one of the first groups who demonstrated against U.S. involvement in Vietnam. More recent opposition has focused on the complete abolition of nuclear weapons and protest of the Persian Gulf Wars. International disarmament remains the primary focus of Women for Peace.
