Bertha Nelson was born September 12, 1909 in Eagle Bend, Minnesota, one of four children born to Anna and Elieck Johnson. She attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota and earned her master's degree from the University of Minnesota. A math teacher, Nelson taught in South Dakota before moving to Lakeville, Minnesota in 1947 where she taught and established an education counseling program at the Lakeville High School. She married Gregg Nelson whom she later divorced. Bertha Nelson bore two sons, Blair and Ron, and a daughter, Leslie. She died in Burnsville on August 10, 1995.
