Samuel Benedict Reed was born in Arlington, Vermont in 1818. His first job was working on the Erie Canal. In 1842, he went to Illinois to work on the Michigan Southern Railroad. In March 1864, Reed was hired to survey the area between the Green River and the Salt Lake Valley, and to recommend a route for the Union Pacific railroad. In 1865, Reed was put in charge of all surveys west of the Continental Divide, and in 1866, he became Engineer of Construction and Superintendent of Operations for the Union Pacific Railroad Company. He died in Illinois in 1891.
