The Historical Review Committee was established in 1973 by the County at the behest of County Executive James Gleason and the Montgomery County Historical Society to oversee the History Project, whose goals were to produce a written comprehensive history of Montgomery County and to locate, inventory, and reproduce its basic historical records. Dr. Rechard K. MacMaster was selected to direct the project and write the history, and Dr. Ray E. Hiebert was hired as editor to revise and organize the text as necessary. Grateful remembrance: the story of Montgomery County, Maryland was published by the Montgomery County Historical Society and Montgomery County Government in 1976, when the bicentennial founding of the County was celebrated.
