Alexander Pope (1646-1717), the father of the poet Alexander Pope, was a linen merchant in Plough Court, Lombard Street, London, after having been an apprentice in Flanders. A convert to the Catholic faith, he moved his family from London to Binfield, Berkshire, in response to anti-Catholic legislature in Parliament. After the death of his first wife, he married Edith Turner (1643-1733), with whom he had a son, the poet Alexander.
