A division-type organizational structure of the Library at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin (WIHV85-A216) can be traced to the mid-19th century. In a 1983 reorganization, the Library was incorporated into the Research Services Division (WIHV89-A59). In 1986 the Library was reestablished as a separate division within the Society. In 2001 the Library merged with the Archives to create the Library-Archives Division.
The Library collects, catalogs, and makes available information found in the Society's printed and microfilm collection covering the history of North America.
