• 1811 February 24: Born in Charleston, South Carolina, son of London and Martha Payne.
• 1935 - 1887 : Student at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
• 1837: Licensed and ordained minister of the Lutheran Church.
• 1837 - 1838 : Pastor of a Presbyterian Church in Troy, New York.
• 1840 - 1343 : Opened a grammar school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
• 1840: Became a member of the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church and worked with Bishop Morris Brown.
• 1843 - 1845 : Pastor of the Israel A. M. E. Church, Washington, D.C.
• 1845 - 1850 : Pastor of the Bethel Church, Baltimore, Maryland.
• 1847: Married Julia A Ferris.
• 1852: Elected Bishop of the A. M. E. Church
• 1856: Having been widowered, married Eliza J. Clark
• 1863 - 1876 : President of Wilberforce University, Ohio.
• 1883: Wrote autobiography, Recollections of Seventy Years.
• 1893 November 29: Died in Wilberforce, Ohio.
