  • 1935 - 1887 : Student at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
  • 1837: Licensed and ordained minister of the Lutheran Church.
  • 1837 - 1838 : Pastor of a Presbyterian Church in Troy, New York.
  • 1840 - 1343 : Opened a grammar school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • 1840: Became a member of the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church and worked with Bishop Morris Brown.
  • 1843 - 1845 : Pastor of the Israel A. M. E. Church, Washington, D.C.
  • 1845 - 1850 : Pastor of the Bethel Church, Baltimore, Maryland.
  • 1847: Married Julia A Ferris.
  • 1852: Elected Bishop of the A. M. E. Church
