Judd, Henry
Judd was a keen amateur explorer, historian and prospector. He may have visited the Weld River, Tasmania as early as 1871 in search of gold and other minerals, and acompanied by other early settlers, made several trips to the Weld throughout the later years of the nineteenth century. He and others formed the Franklin Prospecting Association around 1880 and found gold, pegging out claims on the Weld between 1880 and the 1920's. Most were for gold, but other minerals such as nickel and osmoridium were reportedly found. Judd was also instrumental in the organisation of the Weld Prospecting Association which lasted until the early 1900's, but with little success. He also became known as a recreational bushwalker, writing about his journeys into the Tasmanian bush in a small 32 page book, The Dark Lantern in 1895.
