Hart, Luther, 1783-1834
Variant namesLuther Hart was born in Goshen, CT on July 27, 1783, the son of David and Hannah Hudson Hart. Prior to his admission to Yale in 1803, he worked with his father as a carpenter. After graduating in 1807, he taught at James Morris' Academy in Litchfield South Farms. In September 1808, he entered the Theological Seminary at Andover and became one of its first graduates. He received a license to preach from the Essex Middle Association. Shortly, thereafter, the Congregational Church in Plymouth, CT invited him to preach. The congregation ordained him pastor on September 5, 1810. He married Minerva Potter, daughter of General Daniel Potter of Plymouth on April 25, 1834.
