Benjamin Butler Hersey (1903-1971) was born in Salem, Massachusetts . He graduated from Tufts University with a BS and STB in 1935 and was awarded an honorary DD in 1944. He was ordained as a Universalist minister in Annisquam Village in Gloucester, Massachusetts, in 1931. He also served pastorates at the Congress Square Church of Portland, Maine, and the Church of the Divine Paternity in New York City. During his career he served as national president of the Young People's Christian Union from 1935 to 1938, president of the New York State Convention of Universalists from 1945 to 1951, and a trustee of the Universalist Church of America from 1943 to 1951. He was named Professor of Ministerial Practice and Dean of the Crane Theological School, Tufts University, in 1954 and Woodbridge Professor of Applied Christianity in 1958. In 1968, he and his wife retired to Gloucester, Massachusetts, where he spent the remainder of his life.
