Albert W. Thompson, pioneer Clayton businessman, publisher, civic leader, and historian, was born in Belfast, Maine on May 17, 1864. After living in Colorado he moved to New Mexico. Thompson entered the sheep and real estate businesses in Clayton, N.M. in 1889. Also in 1889, Thompson purchased the Clayton Enterprise, which he operated for two years. In 1905 he relocated to Denver, Colo., but maintained Clayton business interests, and continued to contribute historical columns to local newspapers, as well as writing for Colorado Magazine, and Cattleman. Thompson died on May 10, 1951.

Albert W. Thompson, pioneer Clayton businessman, publisher, civic leader, and historian, was born in Belfast, Maine on May 17, 1864. He was sent to Colorado in 1884 because of ill health. He attended Colorado College for one year, but health problems forced him to abandon his studies. He left Colorado Springs, and moved to New Mexico.

Thompson entered the sheep and real estate businesses in Clayton, N.M. in 1889. He also served as secretary of the Republican Central Committee of Union County. Thompson was Claytons second postmaster (1889-1893?). In 1897, President McKinley appointed him receiver of public money at the U.S. land office in Clayton, a position which he held from 1898-1906.

In 1889, Thompson purchased the Clayton Enterprise, which he operated for two years. Shortly after his wife and son died during childbirth (1905), Thompson left Clayton. He relocated to Denver, but maintained Clayton business interests, and continued to contribute historical columns to local newspapers, as well as writing for Colorado Magazine and Cattleman. Thompson died on May 10, 1951. He left a large portion of his estate to the Clayton Public Library
