English dramatist and translator Benjamin Thompson was trained as a lawyer, but elected not to practice. He was sent to Hamburg as an agent for his father, a merchant, where he translated several plays from German into English. These proved quite successful on the British stage, especially his translations of August von Kotzebue. His original plays were not so well-received, however, a disappointment he felt keenly. He also published a few miscellaneous works.
