John Ball (1794-1884) was the son of Nathaniel and Deborah Ball. In 1836 he moved to Mich. Territory. John opened a law office, Ball and McKee, in Grand Rapids, and served as a representative from Kent and other counties (1838). He married Mary Ball, with whom he had three daughters: Lucy, Flora Ball Hopkins, and Kate Ball Powers. (His family papers are also housed at the Clarke. See his papers, finding aid, or catalog record for further detail.) James H. McKee was born in 1823, the son of Aaron McKee. James was educated in Vt. and Mass. before he moved to Mich. in 1849 and joined Ball in his law firm. James married Hannah, with whom he had at least four children: Willie (Henry), Laura (Lollie) Langdon, Langdon, and Montie. James was alive in 1908. (Information from the collection.).
