Sally Campbell and her husband, Stuart Campbell, participated in Allegany County's (N.Y.) successful struggle to keep New York State from locating its nuclear waste dump in the region. The Campbells were part of an informal group that planned and executed the nonviolent defense of the three proposed low-level radioactive waste dump sites within Allegany County. As the spokesperson for ACNAG (Allegany County Nonviolent Action Group), Sally was the most visible person to the public and to law enforcement and was therefore the first person named in New York State's prosecution of the group. The other three named in the case were the defense coordinators of the three sites: Stuart Campbell, Richard Jones, and Gary Lloyd. They were interrogated at length by the New York State Police and a State Attorney and then tried in State Supreme Court in Buffalo, New York.
