American Lutheran Church (White Sulphur Springs, Mont.)

Hide Profile

This congregation was established in 1933 as a community church funded by the Board of Home Missions of the ELC. The nucleus of charter members included families who had lived in the Norwegian community of Lennep. To begin with pastors in Livingston served American Lutheran, using the facilities of the Episcopal church. During World War II, services were not held and the parsonage was sold. In the 1950s a realignment was made with Livingston, and interns were provided who also served Wilsall’s Shields River. On March 29, 1959 the present church was completed, with the alignment continuing with the Wilsall parish. Subsequently, a Sunday School addition was completed and a parsonage built. In 1976 an arrangement was made that Lutheran and Presbyterian pastors would serve alternately within the Lutheran/Presbyterian parish. Presently an ALC pastor serves both churches. Each congregation has its own governing body and operates independently.
