In retirement she was a volunteer at Fordham and Lenox Hill hospitals and member of the Query Club, the literary club of All Souls' Unitarian Church. She was also member of the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored Peoples (NAACP), and the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). Ryan and published as The Black Swallow of Death in 1972.
