Madeline Smith was the granddaughter of Charlotte Emily Hopkins Fay and Charles Fay, the rector of St. Luke's Church in St. Albans, Vermont. Charles and Charlotte Fay had six daughters: Melusina, Laura, Amy, Kate, Rose, and Lily, and one son: Charles Norman Fay.
