Drexel's Office of Research was established in 1958 as part of an effort to encourage faculty to pursue research. The office was responsible for helping faculty identify research opportunities, as well as administering sponsored research projects. In 1970, responsibility for research administration was transferred to the Office of Community Affairs and Government Relations. In 1985, president William Gaither appointed Drexel's first vice president for research, Richard W. Schneider.
