At the formation of the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches in 1976, Dr. Elwyn Ewald was appointed Executive Secretary. The office of Executive Secretary became responsible for the day by day functioning of the organization. The AELC was involved in dialog with other Lutheran Churches in the United States as well as some church-related organizations.
