Robert S. Johnson was born in Mont. in 1921 and joined the Army on June 17, 1941 at Tacoma, Wash. At the time of his enlistment he was unmarried, had completed grammar school and working in an aircraft factory. Johnson joined the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colo. where he was initally assigned to 110th Mountain Signal Company, but later transferred to Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion of the 87th Infantry Regiment. He also served with the Regimental Headquarters Company of the 87th Infantry Regiment. Johnson participated in the invasion of Kiska Island, Alaska and during combat operations in Italy. He received the Bronze Star Medal for his actions at Castel D'Aiano during March 1945.
