John Young was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in c1750 . He matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1764, graduating MA in 1769. On 9 June 1774, he was installed as Professor of Greek at the University and proved to be an efficient and popular teacher. After filling his chair for nearly half a century, Young died in Glasgow on 18 November 1820 .
Although Young's ripe scholarship was mainly utilised in his classroom, he contributed some valuable notes to Dalziel's 'Collectanea Graeca Majora' (1820). He also produced metrical translations of the 'Odes' of Tyrtaeus, and his jeu d'esprit after Dr. Johnson on Gray's 'Elegy'.
Sir Charles Stuart was born in 1779, inheriting the title of Baron Stuart de Rothesay upon the death of his father in 1845. He spent his career working as a diplomat and in 1801-1803 was based in Vienna, Austria. He died in 1845 .
