Richard W. Arnold was born in Summit, New Jersey, in 1949 to Robert and Kathryn Arnold. Arnold was raised in New Jersey and Connecticut. He studied art history at Yale University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1970. After Yale, Arnold moved to New York and studied art and art history at Queens College, City University of New York. While in New York, Arnold also received a Master of Library Science degree from Pratt Institute and has worked in libraries and museums throughout his career.
A sketch diarist, Arnold uses art to document the people and places of his life. Professionally, his art career began in 1978. His commissions include a large terra cotta chess set and a series of drawings for Thomas J. Watson’s column "The Last Word" in Antiques World . He has exhibited at Cragsmoor Library in Cragsmoor, New York, and the Leslie-Lohman Foundation Gallery in New York City.
