John Ulrich Nef, the son of Swiss immigrants, graduated from Harvard in 1884, and that same year began studies for his Ph.D. in chemistry under Professor Adolf von Baeyer at Munich. From 1889 until 1892 Nef was acting head of the Chemistry Laboratory at Clark University, which he left to come to the newly established University of Chicago. In 1896 he was made head of the Chemistry Department there, a position which he held until his premature death in 1915, at the age of 53 years.
