Manley Grover enlisted in the 7th Regiment of Minnesota volunteers in 1862. He was originally from Massachusetts, and had lived for some years in Cleveland, Minnesota. His enlistment came six days before the Sioux uprising of 1862, which began in August and resulted in the death of from four to eight hundred settlers and soldiers. For two years he served in the Dakotas and Minnesota, and in the last year of the war served in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri, and Alabama. After the war Grover moved back to Foxboro, Massachusetts, where he became a printer of "fashionable" calling cards.
