William John Brownlow Riddell is believed to have been born in 1899 . He was educated at the Glasgow Academy, Scotland before attending the University of Glasgow, graduating MB ChB in 1923. He then attended the Royal London Ophthalmic Hospital, England, graduating with a Diploma in Ophthalmic Medicine and Surgery in 1928 . He qualified MD in 1940 . Riddell took up residency at the Western Infirmary, Glasgow in 1923 going on to become House Surgeon at the Glasgow Eye Infirmary ; Senior House Surgeon at the Royal London Ophthalmic Hospital and entering into private practice in Glasgow from 1928-1964. Others post held by Riddell were Assistant Surgeon [later Surgeon] at Glasgow Ophthalmic Institution, 1931-1964 ; Honorary Consulting Surgeon at Western Infirmary, Glasgow, 1941-1964 ; Professor of Ophthalmology at Glasgow University, 1941-1964 ; Dean of Medicine, 1946-1947 and 1958-1959 . He retired to Aberdeen, Scotland in 1964, and died in Austria in 1976.
