Beatrice Saunders was born in Connecticut in 1915. She earned her bachelor's degree from Smith College in 1936. She is best known as an editor and publisher of social work literature. She was the editor of Family, the publication of the Family Welfare Association of America (1939-1942), editor-in-chief of Girl Scouts publications (1950), editor of Social Work (1955-1980s), and director of NASW publications. She was also staff editor of the Encyclopedia of Social Work (1965, 1971, 1977) and began AFFILIA, the journal of women in social work, in 1984.
