The firm was incorporated in 1898 jointly by James J. Hill and Henry Forster, M.P., as a holding company to acquire five separate properties and consolidate their operation: the Kaslo and Slocan Railway, the International Navigation and Trading Company, the Kaslo and Lardo-Duncan Railway, the Bedlington and Nelson Railway, and the Kootenai Valley Railway. The company was dissolved in 1911 and the properties absorbed into the Great Northern.
