The Florida Folklore Society was founded in 1982 when an organizational meeting was held at the University of South Florida. The society was formed to create a forum for anyone interested in Florida's folk cultures, to give formal recognition to such studies and to encourage scholarships for those interested in pursuing such studies. The society is governed by an Executive Board comprising three officers--a President, President-Elect and Secretary/Treasurer as well as five other board members. The society meets annually and a newsletter is published quarterly.
