University of Wisconsin System minority students and minority alumni led the organization and planning of the event. During the first conference, twelve students presented papers, and six alumni provided comment on the papers. The second and third conferences were held at the University of Wisconsin--Eau Claire and at the University of Wisconsin--La Crosse in 1985 and 1986 respectively.
