In basic training at Camp Hale, Colo., Andrews D. "Andy" Black was the first individual assigned to Company L of the 86th Infantry Regiment. He later transferred to the 10th Mountain Reconnaissance Troop; 87th Infantry Regiment, Company L; Headquarters of the 85th Infantry Regiment before finally joining Company G of the 86th Infantry Regiment where he was a 1st Lieutenant. He also served at Camp Swift, Tex. before shipping out to Italy. Black was awarded the Bronze Star medal for his actions in the Apennine Mountains in April 1945.
