Pi Lambda Theta was founded in 1910 through at the University of Missouri at Columbia as an honor and professional association for women in education. Between 1912 and 1916 six other schools established local chapters spurring the organization of a national association in 1917. Indiana University Bloomington’s Iota chapter of Pi Lambda Theta was chartered in 1920, just three years later. Although begun as a women's organization, Pi Lambda Theta began admitting men in 1974.

As an honor and professional society, the organization’s aim is to foster a professional spirit and the highest standard of scholarship among educators and students in the field of education. To that aim, the Pi Lambda Theta Educational Trust was founded in 1981 (now the Educational Endowment).

Today, the offices of the now international association are located in Bloomington, Indiana, and there are more than 100 chapters throughout the United States and the Philippines representing over 16,000 members.
