Edward H. Durell studied law at Harvard University, graduating in 1831. He settled in New Orleans in 1836 where he practiced law and was a member of the New Orleans Common Council (1854-56). Durell was asked to form a new municipal government after the fall of New Orleans, served as president of the city's Bureau of Finances (1862-64), and briefly served as mayor in 1863. He was appointed U.S. Judge for the eastern district of Louisiana in 1863 (all of Louisiana after 1866) and was president of the Louisiana Constitutional Convention of 1864.
