On February 2, 1936, Roger Deering, son of Charles Deering, died in his home in Albuquerque, leaving Northwestern University more than $6 million. This bequest, as noted by Northwestern's President Walter Dill Scott in his report for 1935-1936, was the latest in a long series of donations to the university from members of the Deering family.
The Roger Deering bequest accounted for all but $1.5 million of the approximately $8 million contributed to Northwestern during 1936-1938. Because the bequest was unrestricted it was possible to resume the educational progress at Northwestern that had been interrupted by the effects of the Great Depression.
