Sydney Musgrove was professor of English at the University of Auckland from 1947 until his retirement in 1979, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor from 1964-1970. He was heavily involved in drama activities at the University throughout his career, reviving the moribund Student Drama Society shortly after arriving, and initiating the annual summer Summer Shakespeare productions in 1963.
