Overview: Frank E. Duddy, Jr. was the 7th president of Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah, serving from 1956-1963. He was the school's first non-ministerial president. Born September 26, 1917 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., he was the only son of Frank Edward and Neva (Warfel) Duddy. He died ca. March, 1986.
Highlights as Westminster College president (1956-1963): Emil Nyman, Westminster College archivist wrote of Duddy's presidency "In seven years Dr. Duddy tripled the budget, doubled the salaries, added a million dollars worth of buildings and lifted Westminster College from a little parochial church-supported school to an accredited, community-oriented Liberal Arts College." During Duddy's presidency such key additions as Carleson and Hogle Halls were added to the college. Hogle Hall (designed as a womens dormitory) was built in 1959 with loans from the Housing and Home Finance Administration. Duddy Complex (currently used for student housing) was named after President Frank E. Duddy.
Education: Attended DePauw University; graduated in June 1939 with A.B. cum laude; Attended Harvard University, 1939-1942; received A.M. in modern European history in June 1940 and Ph.D. in the same field in June 1942. Career: Instuctor in English (Northeastern University, 1940-1941); Instructor in history (DePauw University, March-May 1942; Instructor in humanities (Stephens College, 1942-1943); Went on active duty in U.S. Naval Reserve, June 1943; Instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy (1946-1956); President of Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah from 1956-1963; President of Marietta College in SE Ohio from 1963-1973.
