Dr. Roy J. Deferrari spent the majority of his career at The Catholic University of America both as a professor of Classics and as an administrator. He was born on June 1, 1890 in Stoneham, Massachusetts, the fourth of six children. Dr. Deferrari began studying Latin and Greek while attending Melrose High School and continued his education at Dartmouth College, where he specialized in Greek and Latin literature. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year. After graduating with an A.B. in 1912, he continued his education at Princeton University, earning a M.A. in 1913 and a Ph.D. in 1915. Dr. Deferrari began his teaching career at Princeton as an instructor of Classics. Throughout his career, Dr. Deferrari published widely in various scholarly journals. Initially his research focused on aspects of Greek and Latin literature but his later research, influenced by his role as an administrator, focus more heavily on Catholic education and the role of a Catholic University.
