Yoder was a member of the class of 1896 at the State Normal and Industrial School, now UNCG. Born in 1875, Yoder spent her early years in Charlotte and Lincolnton, N.C. She worked as a schoolteacher to support her family and help her older brother through A&M College, now known as North Carolina State University. Once graduated, her brother loaned her the money to attend college where she finished her coursework in three years and one summer session. After completing her coursework, she married John Andrew Amzi Yoder on November 8, 1899. Yoder's daughter, Katherine Yoder Scharrer, is also a graduate of the North Carolina College for Women (NCCW), now known as UNCG.
