John Galt was a novelist, traveller, friend of Byron, secretary to the British North American Land Company, and founder of the town of Guelph in Ontario. His studies of country life in Scotland make a fascinating contribution to the understanding of social change. He himself regarded his works not so much as novels as 'theoretical histories'.
