Since 1976 the Office of International Programs has been the central administrative unit at Indiana University to ensure that teaching, research, and public service include a global dimension. OIP provides support and coordination and assists in the implementation of international activities on all eight IU campuses. The Overseas Study Program is one of four offices under the direction of the OIP. Initially students in this program went to Mexico, then Peru, and later to Europe and other regions. The OSP administers directly about forty programs abroad, and works with other institutions to co-sponsor another twenty.
International studies at IU fully matured during the Presidency of Herman B Wells. IU recognized the importance of a global approach to education, and a 1955 contract with Thammaset University in Thailand, was the first program to extend IU throughout the globe. In 1961 and 1965 IU was awarded Ford Foundation grants, which were key factors in strengthening the university's committment to foreign study.
Patrick O'Meara has been IU's Dean of International Programs since 1993, and directs a staff of more than 40 located within administrative units all over campus. O'Meara holds a B.A. in Law, University of Capetown, South Africa, 1960; an M.A. in Political Science, Indiana University, 1969; and a Ph.D., 1970, Political Science, Indiana University. He has written numerous books and articles on South Africa, and has been called on frequently for interviews on South Africa.
In 1989, Richard E. Stryker began serving as Executive Associate Dean of International Programs, and Director of Overseas Study. He holds a Ph.D. from UCLA, 1970. As an Associate Professor of Political Science, his teaching and research focus on the problems of severe human deprivation with particular emphasis on South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
