New England brothers who died while serving in the military during the Civil War.

Born in New Hampshire in 1836, James Duncan Harris worked in Chicago as an accountant before the war. Prior to joining the 30th Massachusetts Volunteers as an orderly sergeant, he served possibly in the National Guard and the Eastern Bay State Regiment. Stationed in and around New Orleans and Baton Rouge, he drowned in the Mississippi River, Nov. 4, 1862. Joseph Whipple Harris was born in New Hampshire in 1837 and served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant on the ship Lancaster, 1860-1861. Primarily stationed in Panama, he died of fever Aug. 24, 1861.
