Carel (or Karel) van Mander was a Flemish painter, poet, and artists' biographer who was born in Meulebeke, near Courtrai, West Flanders, Belgium. He travelled in Rome and Vienna, eventually settling in Haarlem, where he established an academy. He is perhaps best known for his Het Schilderboek.

Giovanni Pietro Bellori (1615?-1696) was an Italian librarian, antiquarian, collector, and biographer. He excavated and described Roman antiquities.
