Richard E. Lord was born May 19, 1803 in Lowell, Ohio.

He married Caroline Mayfield on May 3, 1830, in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. They had 2 sons, James Monroe and Thomas Corwin, both of whom became doctors. Richard studied medicine under the tutelage of Dr. Gilvert Mayfield, Caroline's father. He completed his medical education at the Ohio College of Medicine in Cincinnati from which he graduated in 1833. He moved his family to Chesterville, Ohio, where he began his practice. As a sideline, he owned a gristmill and took up farming fulltime after he retired from his medical practice. He was the great grandfather of George L. Parkin, M.D.
