Gertrude P. Rawson (Mrs. Philip N. Rawson, Swarthmore B.A. 1924) submitted this thesis for the B.Litt degree at Oxford University in 1929 and it was rejected due to "some bibliographical imperfections in the third appendix." She offered it in 1930 to Harvard Professor Hyder Rollins, who accepted it for the library's collection of manuscripts on English ballads. She then continued her studies toward a Ph.D. at the University of Texas, but in a different field of study.
