William R. Carter graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1852. He secured teaching positions in Virginia and later moved to Mississippi from 1858 to 1860. He served as a lieutenant-colonel in the 3rd Virginia Cavalry, CSA, and died at the battle of Trevillian's Station in June 1864.
