Wood, S.A.M. (Sterling Alexander Martin), 1823-1891.
Sterling A. Martin Wood was born in 1823 in Florence, Ala. and studied law at Columbia, Tenn. He formed several legal partnerships until 1857, then was solicitor of the fourth judicial circuit, and represented Lauderdale County in the state legislature.
During the Civil War Wood served as a captain of a Lauderdale company, colonel of the 7th Alabama Infantry Regiment and was promoted to brigadier general in 1862. He saw action at Shiloh, Perryville, Murfreesboro, and Chickamauga. He resigned in 1863 and returned to practice law in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
After the war he represented Tuscaloosa County in the state legislature, 1882-1883, and was an attorney for the Alabama Great Southern Railroad.
