Thomas Speed, lawyer, was born near Bardstown, Kentucky, in 1841. He was a member of the prominent Speed family of Kentucky. During the Civil War, he served in the Union Army, first as a private in the 8th Kentucky Cavalry and lastly as lieutenant and adjutant of the 12th Kentucky Veteran Infantry. Speed later became secretary of the Filson Club and frequently contributed to the club's publications. He died in Louisville January 31, 1905.
