The Works Progress Administration (WPA) was a Federal program created in 1935 to provide employment for Americans left jobless by the Depression. At the time it was discontinued in 1943, the WPA was employing 8 million people. In addition to building roads and bridges, WPA employees conducted numerous projects devoted to the humanities. One such project was a survey of records of historical interest in local government offices throughout the U.S. The records in this collection are the result of the Historical Records Survey conducted in Westchester County.

From the description of Records of survey of Westchester County Clerk's Office. 1936-1940. (Westchester County Archives). WorldCat record id: 18198792
